People with sensitive teeth describe a sharp pain or tingling while they do things such as brush their teeth, consume hot or cold foods and drinks, eat acidic foods or even simply from breathing in cold air. This sensitivity occurs when the tooth's underlying layer of dentin becomes exposed by loss of enamel or receding gum tissue, which is the roots protective covering. Once dentin is exposed thousands of tiny canals that lead to the nerve can allow stimuli to reach the tooth's nerve resulting in pain.
