Sports drinks sound healthy, but do you know what they're loaded with? Because they are called “sports drinks,” it's easy to associate these types of beverages with athleticism and good health. However, sugar is often one of the top ingredients. Therefore, they do not pose as healthy alternatives to water for daily hydration.
Sports drinks were intended to be consumed by individuals who are engaged in intense physical activity for longer than an hour. For most kids, water can provide the right level of hydration before, during, and after physical activity. However, studies have shown that many kids have been drinking these beverages daily – even in the absence of physical activity. Consequently, kids get way too much sugar and too many calories, and this has an effect on kids' overall health as well as their oral health.
Water is always the best thing to give your kids to keep them hydrated. If your child does drink a sports beverage, make sure to have him or her swish with water after or chew sugar-free gum.
