Did you know that mouth guards may prevent concussions?

Custom-made mouth guards are crucial in the prevention of sports-related dental injury. In addition to the prevention of dental trauma, a study1 shows that custom mouth guards may also reduce athletes' risk of sports-related concussion. The study suggests that high school football players who wore store-bought, over-the-counter mouth guards were more than twice as likely to suffer mild brain injuries/concussions than those who wore custom-made, uniquely fitted mouth guards.

Although no conclusive evidence is out there supporting this claim, there seems to be a strong tie between wearing a custom mouth guard and a reduced risk of concussion while playing sports. More research is certainly needed, but the study promotes the value of a custom mouth guard. A custom mouth guard is made just for you, and the fit is very comfortable.

With proper care, a mouth guard can last much longer than over-the-counter mouth guards. Fall sports are swinging into gear! Parents – be sure to schedule your child for a custom mouth guard at our office. Give us a call at 207-784-2211 or fill out our contact form for more information today!
